When hiring a professional janitorial team, you’ll sign a service agreement, which typically includes your desired scope of work and schedule, essentially providing the framework for your cleaning to-do list. Consider this your janitorial checklist.

Your final checklist will be unique to your organization and facility. It confirms that requested tasks are completed and guarantees that the standards and quality of work are consistently met. Plus, if you haven’t decided on a provider, your unique checklist can help determine which prospective janitorial service will fit your and your facility’s needs the best.

Below, we’ll provide a janitorial checklist template your facility can use as a guide when creating your own. Then, we’ll take a closer look at each component of a janitorial checklist.

What Should be Included on the Janitorial Checklist?

A janitorial checklist will include a variety of routine tasks essential to workplace health and appearance, cleaning schedules, and specific locations to be serviced. However, the specific details may vary depending on the organization's needs.

Because your facility may have more specific requests based on the nature of your industry, your checklist may also include any additional services outside of routine janitorial services, such as hard floor care and carpet cleaning..

Your janitorial checklist will serve as a framework that ensures your team is meeting your facility’s needs and industry standards.

Key Details to Include in a Janitorial Checklist

Now that you've seen an example, here's a detailed overview of the most important components you'll find in a janitorial checklist so you can decide what's relevant to your facility.

  • Tasks: These include any cleaning or maintenance you need. Typical tasks include emptying trash, sanitizing high-touch surfaces, dusting, vacuuming or mopping floors, and replenishing soap dispensers. If you don’t see a task in the checklist, ask your prospective provider if it’s something they can accomplish.
  • Schedule: The janitor checklist should clearly outline the cleaning schedule, including any non-routine or special event cleanings. Typically, the tasks are marked as daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed. Tasks such as emptying trash and sanitizing high-touch surfaces may occur daily, while others might be scheduled weekly or monthly. Stating the exact frequency ensures clear expectations.
  • Location: Your checklist should list which areas of the building require cleaning, such as offices, restrooms, waiting areas, break rooms, etc. Be sure to account for commonly overlooked areas like high-traffic hallways, stairwells, and elevators.
  • Specific details: It’s handy to have a column on the checklist available for additional information labeled “Notes” or “Specific Requests”. For example, perhaps there is a policy in place that providers report any maintenance concerns. Or the windows only need to be spot cleaned daily, but fully cleaned just once a week. These types of details would be included in this column.

Work With Your Provider to Customize Your Janitorial Checklist

To ensure cleaning services meet your facility’s needs, take time to review and customize the checklist with your provider. Discuss any specific requirements, preferences, or overlooked areas, and make adjustments to the janitor checklist as needed. This helps set clear expectations and builds a stronger, more effective partnership.

Or, if you haven’t decided on a provider yet, a checklist can help you determine if a provider will be the right fit for your business.

B&T will work with you to create a customized janitorial checklist that aligns with your agreement and suits the specific needs of your building. Contact us today to get started.
